GREEN CARD LOTTERY
(Diversity Visa Program)

The Diversity Lottery makes available a maximum of 55,000 immigrant visa numbers annually to persons selected at random from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. There is a separate registration for each year's visas. Information on registration for the lottery is announced each year by the State Department.

  Qualifying for the Lottery:

Nationality:

  • To be eligible for the lottery, you must be born in an eligible foreign country or be entitled to claim the privileges of that country for the purpose of the lottery
  • Spouses may claim the privilege of their spouse's country of birth
  • Unmarried minor children (under the age of 21) can claim the privileges of their parents' country of birth, and
  • An applicant born in a country of which neither parent was born or lived at the time of birth can claim the privileges of either parent's country of birth.

Education / Work Experience:

  • You must have at least a high school education or its equivalent, or

How and When to Apply:

The lottery registration period lasts one month. Sometime in August of this year, the United States government will announce the dates of the registration period. Entries received before or after the registration dates will be disqualified regardless of when they are postmarked. Entries sent to an incorrect address will also be disqualified. Only applicants who are selected are notified. Submission of more than one application will invalidate the application. Failure of the applicant to personally sign his or her entry will result in disqualification.
